China is now in the process of developing a replacement for the Microsoft Windows operating system, and for Google Android, systems that would decrease, if not entirely eliminate, dependence on U.S. software.
The state-controlled Xinhua news agency reported Sunday that one of the reasons for China having to developing its own operating system for PCs and mobile devices is U.S. surveillance.

The nationalist-inspired operating system may be released in October and will be available not only for government personnel and agencies, but for Chinese consumers.
A team of developers are working to complete the project, under the guidance of Guangnan Ni, co-founder of the computer maker Lenovo.
After Lenovo came to be 1984, Ni has remained to be one of the most respected figures in the Chinese technology thrust. Speaking to Xinhua, Ni said he proposed to the the government that it should take the lead and guide Chinese software developers who were then building their OS on Google's Android platform.
He was instrumental in convincing the government that China could build its operating systems from scratch, given that the government has complete control of the software market.
Having its own domestic OS could also save China from crashes that could bring down entire systems dependent on Windows and Android.
In April, when Microsoft ended support for Windows XP, nearly three-quarters of Chinese computers were left at risk of viruses and malware. Following that, China blacklisted Windows 8, Microsoft's latest OS, and banned it from government computers.
China did cite Microsoft's monopoly as one of the reasons it disallowed Windows 8, but it also mentioned surveillance by the U.S. as one other reason for needing to develop a domestic OS.
hinese developers suggest that U.S. intelligence agencies could insert backdoors into American-made software and continue to spy on China through Windows and Android.
