The five straight CSL champs dropped a disappointing 1-2 decision in the hands of last season's eight-placed squad, Chongqing Lifan FC, on the road at the Chongqing Olympic Sports Center last Sunday, as reported by Shanghai Daily.
Brazilian forward Fernando Henrique da Conceição scored the first of his two goals in the match at the 32nd minute off an assist from teammate Luo Xin to let Chongqing stun the reigning CSL winners. Lifan held on to the one-point lead until the halftime break.
Guangzhou was able to equalize the match seven minutes into the second half, courtesy of its €42 million man Jackson Martinez, in hopes of avoiding one of its worst starts in a season in recent history.
However, Fernandinho netted his second goal at 74th, this time from a pass by Argentine forward Emanuel Gigliotti, to hand World Cup-winning head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari's boys their first loss of the new season.
Meanwhile, Changchun also lost a 1-2 game to Hangzhou Greentown FC at the Yellow Dragon Sports Center also last Sunday, as per Football Australia.
The hosts struck early with two quick goals from Taiwanese midfielder Chen Po-liang and newly-acquired Australian forward Tim Cahill at the third and 21st minutes respectively to build a two-point lead.
The advantage held on for most of the game, but Yatai was able to score a consolation goal at the 70th courtesy of Bolivian striker Marcelo Moreno to avoid a shutout.
The predicted result is a 2-0 decision for Guangzhou Evergrande as the champions go back to their winning form.
Guangzhou Evergrande starting lineup (4-2-3-1 formation): Zeng; Li, Young-Gwon, Feng, Zhang; Paulinho, Huang; Gao, Goulart, Zheng; Martinez
Changchun Yatai starting lineup (4-2-3-1 formation): Song; Zhang, Ismailov, Yan, Jack; Matic, He; Fan, Du, Jiang; Moreno
