(Photo : Reuters) Lead researcher Ivan Sprajc is confident they will uncover more ancient Mayan cities in the Mexican jungle.
A team of archaeologists recently uncovered two large Mayan cities in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.
The team led by Ivan Sprajc, associate professor at the Research Center of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, is very confident the new discovery will only lead to the uncovering of even more cities in the jungle, which to this day have remained unexplored.

"In the jungle you can be as little as 600 feet from a large site and do not even suspect it might be there," they said.
Lagunita, the first site, was studied by the American archaeologist Eric Von Euw in the 1970s. Its location was unknown until Sprajc and his team found it.
The second site, on the other hand, was a city unknown to scientists. The team named it "Tamchen," or "deep well" in Yucatec Maya, since they discovered bottle-shaped underground chambers in the city used for collecting rain water.
Sprajc and his team believe the two cities existed during the Late and Terminal Classic periods (600 A.D. - 1000 A.D.) and were more likely abandoned during the period, as well.
Sprajc said what they've uncovered isn't the whole two cities quite yet. Calling the uncovered areas merely "downtown," he believes the two cities will be impressively huge.
So far, the most significant discoveries in the two cities are a 20-meter high temple pyramid; structures that resemble palaces and an intricately designed façade with a massive doorway in Lagunita.
According to Sprajc, the doorway represents "the entrance to a cave and, in general, to the watery underworld, place of mythologized origin of maize and abode of ancestors."
The team, which is currently awaiting more funding, believes further research and excavation will determine the significance of the two cities to the region during that time period.
Aside from Lagunita and Tamchen, Sprajc and his team also uncovered the ancient city of Chactun in 2013.
Chactun is 10 kilometers from the site of Lagunita.
