Is the ALS Ice-Bucket Fundraiser just a gimmick? Man who suffers from the disease says No

Jack Evans from Surrey claims that the ALS Ice-Bucket Fundraiser is more than just a gimmick. The viral challenge has earned millions of dollars from celebrities and ordinary folks over the past few weeks. Evans claims that the ice-bucket challenge would give the people the feeling of having the disease.

Evans chatted with the Acting Mayor of Surrey, Linda Hepner, saying that the ice bucket challenge gives people a realistic sense of the disease as well as funding the organization so they can find a way to cure it. The disease was not well-known until now.

The family of Evans hosted an ice bucket challenge for their neighborhood to participate in on August 20 at the Sullivan Park. The event had more than 30 friends and families in attendance and were able to donate for the said cause. They were able to raise more than US$1,200 for their father.

Evans talked about the disease saying that it bumps to one's nervous senses which makes one feel something 300 percent more. 78-year-old Evans said that he has been suffering from the disease for two and a half years now. He likened his situation as if he was being placed in a big ice cube.

Her daughter, Coleen, added that people have been saying the challenge is just for showmanship and that it does not mean anything. The challenge is indeed a hype but it is more than a philanthropist activity. She noted that lots of people do not know what the disease means and the awareness is really low in numbers. She said that even doctors and nurses do not know a lot about the disease.

Evans was a lineman for BC Hydro back in his working days and his son, John, noted how much his father has changed. From a very strong man, Evans became a frail individual. John also said that he will be supporting not only his father but also other patients suffering from the disease.

The campaign has now reached over US$53 million in donation.
