After receiving backlash from Americans and British alike, the British diplomats in the U.K. embassy apologized for Tweeting a photo message joking about the 1812 War indicating the burning of the White House.
The post in question is a photo of a rectangular cake decorated with American and British flags and a miniature White House at the center with a caption: "Commemorating the 200th anniversary of burning the White House. Only sparklers this time!"

Many American and British netizens criticized the 'poor-tasting' post over the Internet while some news agencies, such as The Independent UK, described the post as a 'minor social media inspired blip.'
Another Twitter user described the post as 'stupid and tasteless.'
According to the British Embassy's Twitter page @UKinUS, the post was meant to mark not only the anniversary of the burning of the White House during the 1812 War by the Redcoats, but also the "strong friendship" both nations share at present.
"Apologies for earlier Tweet. We meant to mark an event in history & celebrate our strong friendship today," they wrote two hours later and posted a link to an article entitled "The Torch of Friendship."
The article, written by Patrick Davies and published in the Huffington Post on August 22, talked about the details on how Washington was sieged in August 24, 1814 and how both nations have moved on after 200 years.
He even cited how the British prime minister and U.S. President exchanged 'wisecracks' about the burning two years ago with Obama stating that 'the redcoats made quite an impression' and had 'really lit the place up.'
In response, British PM acknowledged how the White House is currently 'better defended' citing that the Americans are "clearly not taking any risks with the Brits this time."
After the apology has been made, some netizens Tweeted that they thought the post was funny, with one of them saying that there was no need to apologize since it's all for fun.
