The chairman of Mission Hills said that taking a look at the interests of the youth, and using these interests, will greatly help to strengthen the communication between youths from mainland China and Hong Kong.

Ken Chu, son of the late Mission Hills founder, David Chu Shu-ho, said this to the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in Beijing last week, reports the South China morning Post.

Chu, a former overseas student in Canada, said that schools from both Hong Kong and the mainland should set up smaller events in addition to the already organized at the national level.

He added that other events or activities, such as street dance competitions, cosplay events, musical and cultural activities can also be organized and used to enhance the exchange between the youth.

“Young people from the mainland and Hong Kong have a lot of common interests like comics and electronic games,” Chu said. “Organising joint events or competitions will provide more channels to enhance communication.”

“Tapping into areas that young people are delighted to see and hear will make exchanges more effective,” he added.

Engaging the Youth

Chu said this after CPPCC chairman Yu Zhengsheng challenged other members to engage the youth.

Another CPPCC member, Rosanna Wong Yick-Ming who is also the executive director of the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, said that it is important for the youth to focus on interests that will sustain their engagement, adding that they should also learn more about the mainland's policies as well.

Aside from having exchanges, job opportunities are also waiting for Hong Kong youths, this, thanks to the city's shared heritage with Guangdong province, Hong Kong Youth Exchange Promotion United Association chairman George Lung Chee-ming told Xinhua.

For Chu, who shared to some youth his life as a former overseas student, it's simply important to help the youth dream bigger.

“I am glad that I have these experiences, and I also encourage today’s young people to broaden their horizons by doing different jobs while studying.”
