AQSIQ of China: Do not eat New Zealand milk powders of three batch numbers

August 4th, New Zealand dairy giant Fonterra said it would recall over 1,000 tonnes of its dairy products because Fonterra's whey protein had been contaminated with a toxic bacteria. The bacteria can cause botulism, which is a potentially fatal disease. Botulism can cause nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting, paralysis or even death.

Fonterra is a New Zealand multinational dairy co-operative owned by 10,600 New Zealand farmers. The company is responsible for approximately 30% of the world's dairy exports and is New Zealand's largest company.

On August 4th, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China (AQSIQ) issues a urgent consumer alert to remind Chinese consumers not to eat three batches of two specific Karicare infant formulas produced in New Zealand.

The recalled products are Karicare Infant Formula Stage 1 (0-6 months, batch numbers 3169 and 3170, "use by" dates are by June 17th, 2016 and June 18th, 2016), and Karicare Gold+ Follow On Formula Stage 2 (6-12 months, batch number D3183, "use by" date is by December 31st, 2014). The batch number and  "use by" date are stamped on the bottom of the tank. Karicare milk powders is made by Nutricia and supplied by Fonterra. According to the recall notice, other products from Nutricia New Zealand Corporate are not involved.

According to New Zealand government, Australia, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam had received the whey protein. But China's AQSIQ said, after investigation, China didn't imported the above recalled products from New Zealand by normal trade. China's AQSIQ reminds Chinese consumers not to eat the above three batches of specific Karicare infant formulas produced in New Zealand if they have bought these milk powders online, or have carried them from New Zealand.
