Chinese eight-year-old boy died from jellyfish sting


August 2nd, Xiaoyu and his family went to play in Nandaihe bathing beach in Henan province, China. Unfortunately, Xiaoyu was stung by a jellyfish and caused acute pulmonary edema. Later in that afternoon, he was declared dead at hospital.

"We never expect Xiaoyu won't come back any longer." Yesterday, Xiaoyu's family wept uncontrollably besides Xiaoyu's bed.

Xiaoyu's father Mr. Wang recalled, on August 2nd, he, Xiaoyu and other six family members went to play in Nandaihe bathing beach together.

"Xiaoyu was playing at the seaside. Suddenly, he said his leg hurt." Mr. Wang said, "I found Xiaoyu's legs were bloated." So Mr. Wang rushed to find the beach staff and was told the kid was stung by jellyfish.   

The beach staff rubbed some white alum for Xiaoyu, and suggested that he should be sent to hospital immediately.

"Xiaoyu still could walk when he reached the hospital." Xiaoyu's aunt recalled. But red ecchymosis started to appear on Xiaoyu's legs. And he felt thirsty with a feeling of nausea.

A physician-in-charge said Xiaoyu didn't look well, and suggested that he should be given emergency treatment at once.

The doctors rescues Xiaoyu for an hour, at 5 p.m. in the afternoon, all rescue measures proved ineffectual. Xiaoyu was declared dead at hospital.

According to the death certificate issued by hospital, Xiaoyu died from acute pulmonary edema caused by a jellyfish sting.

Yesterday, the local Propaganda Department said that the jellyfish were breeding in shallow offshore waters in this season. And certain box jellyfish species also rest on the seabed in shallow water. Visitors should be very careful when they swim in the area and look out the jellyfish. Meanwhile, the local relevant department decides to carpet inspect the bathing beach to prevent further tragedies.
