Health Professionals More Emotional when Dealing with Health Risks Close to Home

Researchers at the University of Haifa in Israel have found out that health professionals have the tendency to become more emotional when a health risk gets closer to home.
Anat Gesser Edelsburg, one of the researchers from the School of Public Health, said that when the risk is based from a remote area it is easier for health professionals to maintain a professional point of view.

When the risk is closer to home, they tend to behave the way the general public behaves with their decision-making clouded by emotions.
Through their study, the researchers found out that when the perceived risk is far from home, health care professionals think analytically and more knowledge-based in comparison with the general public.
Researchers found out that the general public have the tendency to respond to a disease based from personal experiences.
The study also showed that when health care professionals respond to risks closer to home, they become less analytical and scientific bound.
Edelsburg also explained that when the risk is closer, the health care professionals' concern grow and fear of the unknown increases.
She also said that when the risk is closer, public panic even adds to the concern of the health professionals.
