Yao Ming’s Multiple Roles After Retirement


 "I am sorry I am too busy today." Yao Ming ran to us on the scheduled interview day. It was a big day for him: the third Charity event of Yao Fund. He was not only the director and organizer of the event, but also the guest performer for the US all-star team. Many teammates of Yao Ming have joined the event.

Yao Ming retired two years ago. "Retiring from the basketball team is just a pause, not the end of my sport life." After he retired, he has got different titles such as the member of the national committee of China, the chairman of the Shanghai East Basketball Club, the founder of the Yao Fund, the vice chairman of the Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association and the first vice chairman of the Shanghai Basketball Association. He is going to fulfill his dream with more contents. "I don't know which one I like most. I think a person has different tasks for different stages. Once you start, you should complete it." Yao said.

Basketball Dream

In 2002, Yao Ming started to play basketball in NBA. It was a remarkable time. Though he didn't reach his top in NBA, he left a name in NBA for Chinese player.

Today his Shanghai Dream just begins. Yao takes over Shanghai Sharks club when he came back. "Shanghai Sharks is my family. I will make the family stronger and bigger so they will go on years by years." At first, he tried to use the US methods to train the team. The result was not good. So he learned from the experience. "We have many practical problems in CBA, and I have learned a lot from the previous training that not all American ways are fit for us. We will find our own way."

Social Responsibility

Yao Ming is responsible not only for basketball but also the society. He sets up the Yao Fund and helps build 16 schools, which have benefited 9,000 teenagers. "I hope I can help those people to get more assistance from the public." He was once considered to be the most successful "export" to the west. Yao joked he was a folk diplomat. He thinks the folk diplomat has its own advantages to share more culture information with other countries.

A Post-80s dare to undertake the task

As a Post-80s, Yao thinks sports can help young people learn what teamwork is. "Everyone has a Chinese Dream. My dream is to go back to education." Most of the post-80 generations are the only children in the family, and they may lack of the teamwork sprit. Teamwork helps people to shape their characteristics.  "I think the post-80 generations do not need to rush to success. Life is long and you can start the business after your thirties. "

About Yao Ming

Yao Ming, the famous Chinese basketball player. He was born in 1980, is 2.26 meter in height. He started to get basketball train when he was ten years old, and joined the Journal National Team at eighteen. He led the Shanghai team to win the champion of CBA in 2002. June in 2002, he went to U.S. to play basketball for Huston Rockets. In 2011 he retired because of the leg injuries.
