John Schnabel: 'Gold Rush' Star Dies at 96

(Photo : Facebook/Gold Rush) John Schnabel, a regular on the Discovery Channel series, "Gold Rush," has passed away on Friday at 96.

John Schnabel, star of the Discovery Channel reality series 'Gold Rush,' died on Friday, March 18 in Porcupine Creek, Alaska at the age of 96.

Schnabel's family confirmed the news, stating that the owner of the Big Nugget mine passed away peacefully in his sleep.

"We couldn't have asked for a better father, grandfather and overall family man," Schnabel's family said in a statement to People. "He was a true legend and we appreciate all of your love and support as we celebrate his wonderful life."

Schnabel, a military veteran, has been a regular on the series since its very first season, which premiered in 2010. The reality show follows different mining crews and their excavation of gold in the Yukon Territory.

Born in Kansas, Schnabel moved to Alaska on the run from law enforcement authorities, who were after him for bootlegging alcohol. He worked with his father at a sawmill in Haines in the

Schnabel was married to Erma Dire, with whom he had five children.

He purchased the Gold Nugget Mine at the age of 68 when doctors advised him to stay active following a triple bypass surgery. Schnabel's grandsons Payson and Parker took over control of the mine after his health started to decline with his increasing age.

As a tribute to Schnabel, Discovery Channel is airing a special featuring the late miner and Parker as well as an on-air memorial card, which will be followed by a two-hour 'Gold Rush' event.
