Out of 157 participating countries, China ranks 83rd as the happiest country in the world in the recently released fourth World Happiness Report. This is a step higher than the country's ranking last year, 84th place. The ranking was conducted by Gallup. The 2016 report was released in Rome on Wednesday just in time for the UN World Happiness Day this Sunday.

The report was first released in 2012, the second in 2013, the third in 2015, and the latest one this year. The gauge of happiness is represented by a ladder and respondents are asked which part of the ladder they see themselves in - the highest step as their happiest and most contented state and the lowest step as otherwise.
China has shown a quantum leap in the past years in its national gross domestic product, generosity, and life expectancy, among others. This might have been the reason for its improved happiness over time. In fact, in January of this year, a UK-based survey website reported that Chinese people are the most optimistic in the world. The poll showed China-based individuals are found to be four times happier and more content than any other people on the planet.
All these, however, seem to defy the statement made by Chief Wang Yang of the Guangdong Party in 2012 that the Chinese Communist Party cannot fully make the people of China happy.
The top 10 most contented countries in the planet in this year's World Happiness Report list include Denmark, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia, and Sweden. The last 10 countries, where people don't seem to find happiness, include Madagascar, Tanzania, Liberia, Guinea, Rwanda, Benin, Afghanistan, Togo, Syria, and Burundi.
