Toddlers can learn probability through watching people, scientist find

Scientists used the idea of children learning skills through watching people to make them understand the concept of probability.
They found out that a child as young as two years old can use mathematically concepts to help them easily understand the world around them.
Anna Waismeyer from the University of Washington said that researchers wanted to see if young children can detect imperfect ways on winning the game that they are playing.

They also wanted to find out of the children would use a better strategy in winning the game for their own advantage.
To come up with the results, researchers created a cause and effect game where the child watched as the scientist playing at first.
The game is about placing two different wooden blocks in a lunchbox-sized box that activated a marble-dispensing machine.
The children watch twelve run-throughs of this game for about 20 minutes the children when children played this game 72 percent of the children picked up the block that has a higher success rate.
To prove the validity of their results, researchers then showed the video of to a different group of toddlers with varied probability.
The researchers showed a video of one block activating the marble four out of six times and showing another block with the less probable chance activating the marble machine four out of 12 times.
When the children played the game most of the children picked up the block with higher probability for success.
Andrew Meltzoff said believe that their finding can help explain the ability of children to quickly learn.
He said that children can learn about causality even if the people they are watching don't get it right all the time.
Researchers believe that these findings can help educators develop a curriculum that will harness the ability of toddlers to learn through constant observation.
Waismeyer said that the current way of teaching probabilities is based from fraction and decimals and children find it hard to understand the concept that were introduced in grade school.
She believes that it would be easier if mathematical principles were introduced earlier in a way that's child friendly.
