Famous celebrity couple Alex Fong and Stephy Tang shocked fans when they announced that they were ending their 10-year relationship on March 17, 2016.

While Fong remained quiet during the day their breakup was announced, he has now also officially released his own statement, which shed some light on the reason behind their split.

Just like his ex-girlfriend, Fong stressed that the breakup was mutual. While promoting their new film, "The Anniversary," in December of last year, there were already obvious differences between them, which made them decide to cool off for three months, according to Jayne Stars.

While some might speculate that they planned their breakup to help promote the film, Fong explained, "We didn't want malevolent people to think we were using breakup rumors to promote the film."

He added that they value their relationship and tried to make it work by continuing to see and talk to each other. However, when they reached their 10-year anniversary, they both decided that it was best if they go their separate ways.

Though no longer together, Fong said that he is not hesitant to work with his ex-girlfriend again. "The Anniversary," directed by Patrick Kong, is ironically about a couple whose marriage fizzled out after being together for 10 years. Though they cheated on each other and are on the brink of divorce, they end up reconciling. 

As for Tang, Lollipop reported about rumors that they broke up due to her being disheartened because Fong would not commit to marriage. But in a previous interview, it was actually her who became vocal about her fears of being married.

And while fans may never know the full reason why they broke up, the two stars, through their agency, thanked fans for their support and promised to remain good friends and partners at work.
