In the second set of the match, Zhang applied pressure on the service game of Zhuk, who was the 2015 Wimbledon Junior Girls' winner. The tournament's wildcard tried to hang on, fighting off two break points, but eventually yielded to trail 0-2.

Zhang, 27, kept up her serve to bring the set to 5-2 and capitalized on her first match point on the seemingly pressured youngster to finish victory in less than an hour.

Zhang will next play the tourney's 12th seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine for the third round berth.  The 21-year-old Svitolina is currently ranked by the WTA as the world No. 16.

She won the recently concluded BMW Malaysian Open and managed to reach the third round of the BNP Paribas Open. It will be the first time that the two professional tennis players will clash on the court.

Meanwhile, the former doubles world No.1 Peng Shuai of China defeated Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium (WTA's world No. 53) in two straight sets 6-3, 7-5 of their first round match and enters the next stage of the prestigious tennis event.
