Catherine "Cici" Bellis became the youngest player to win a match in the US Open at only 15 years of age.

Bellis - ranked 1,029 - was facing 12th seed Dominika Cibulkova from Slovakia, whose most notable achievement was a finals appearance at the 2014 Austalian Open.

Bellis opened fast and strong, using power, techniques, and her never-say-die attitude. She kept Cibulkova on the defensive, winning 10 out of 11 service points and only allowing only one game for her seeded opponent. She won the set 6-1 in only 23 minutes.

The second set saw Cibulkova mount a come back, winning the set at 6-4. Cibulkova carried the momentum over to the third set, leading early at 3-1.

As news of Bellis' playing spread, more and more people were gathering at the stadium to watch the young tennis player.

They started cheering and chanting for her, something that motivated and made her play better, Bellis says.

Where other players would have been deflated by the situation, Bellis fought harder, capitalizing on her good serve and effectively attacking Cibulkova's second serve. She won the third set (6-4) and the match.

At the post-game interview, Bellis revealed that she went into the match not expecting to win, but just to gain some experience. Her father and she were equally surprised and glad at her win and the crowd's overwhelming support.

If she were to become a professional, her win against Cibulkova would net her US $60,000 as prize money.

However, she has stated that she would like to stay an amateur and play in college more.

"I try to focus on tennis rather than anything else," Bellis commented.

Before Bellis, there had been Anna Kournikova who had also won when she was 15, Jennifer Capriati at 17, and Melanie Oudin at 19.
