The live-streaming app focuses its vision around live events. It brings people together to watch live events in a place where they can get information instantly. It is also available in on iOS and Android devices and is viewable on the Web, as well as the one of the first apps to launch in Apple TV. Periscope has so many features including landscape support, web profiles, the ability to skip ahead in replays, GoPro video support, and viewing streams within tweets.
“We’re proud of what we’ve built together and we’re excited to share just how far we’ve come. As of today, over 200 million broadcasts have been created on Periscope and over 110 years of live video are watched every day on iOS and Android. For everyone who joined us along the way, we hope this reaffirms that you are a part of something bigger. Thank you for making Periscope a vibrant global community– it means everything to us,” Periscope said in a blog post.
Periscope was first launched in March 2015. In August, it garnered 40 years of live video watched everyday. Its success can attributed to the interest of internet community with live content. Twitter-owned live streaming service reported on events around the world like the Nepal earthquake, the Baltimore uprisings, and the Syrian refugee crisis in Europe. Celebrities including Jamie Foxx, John Mayer, and Chris Hardwick joined Periscope.
Meanwhile, Periscope's competitor Meerkat recently announced it is refocusing and changing up its business model, partly because of competition from Periscope and Facebook Live.
