Yuan made breaks of 51, 102 and 55 as he beat the 34-year-old Gould, who was a 2015-16 Australian Goldfields Open finalist.

"I felt good in general and my opponent left chances for me, so I managed to make some decent breaks," the young cueman told on worldsnooker.com. "My coach told me that I needed to work on clearing the colors and long potting and I think it worked.

Yuan will be facing the former world No. 2 Graeme Dott of Scotland for a berth in the tournament's third round. The 38-year-old Scottish professional snooker player is the 2006 World Snooker Championship and the 2007 China Open winner.

In other games, the reigning world champion and current second-best player of the sport Stuart Bingham of England made three consecutive centuries in a 5-3 triumph over 27-year-old compatriot Sam Baird. He is to play world No. 70 Ian Burns in the next round.

2015 Shanghai Masters champion Kyren Wilson beat current world No. 42 Tom Ford 5-3.

Scot Rhys Clark edged a decider against Mark Davis, while Mark King trashed Ali Carter 5-2.

Incumbent world No. 6 Judd Trump was given a walkover by Stuart Carrington and there were also wins for Martin O'Donnell, Jimmy Robertson, Ryan Day, Marco Fu, Darryl Hill, Rod Lawler and Lee Walker.

The ranking event is the last before the season-ending World Championship in Sheffield, which starts on 16 April.
