MLB's American League East division team New York Yankees suffered an unlikely distressing blow on Wednesday after a CT scan disclosed a chip fracture in the right wrist of reliever Andrew Miller.

In an earlier x-rays taken, the results were negative making the Yankees believe that they had dodged a bullet with Miller. But according to ESPN, the Bronx-based baseball club sent out a press release at about 8:30 pm on Wednesday evening announcing the scary injury.

The Yankees said that a hand specialist will be evaluating the condition of Miller to determine the next course of actions to be taken. The club did not give specific time table of how long Miller is expected to be out.

It was scary," Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who was a National League Manager of the Year in 2006, said. "You see a guy leave the mound like that and you worry. That doesn't say that there's something definitely broken, but it said it really hurt."

The injury cropped up on Miller's first and only pitch of the match, which Braves pinch-hitter Willians Astudillo lined back at him.

The ball hit Miller on the and he straightaway left the mound on impact in pain.

Miller is a product of the North Carolina Tar Heels and was the 2006 MLB Draft sixth overall pick selected by the Detroit Tigers. He was traded to the Florida Marlins after the 2007 season and moved to the Boston Red Sox after being traded in 2010.

During his stint with the Red Sox, the 30-year-old Gainesville-born became a relief pitcher and started to establish himself a success in MLB. He was later on traded to the Baltimore Orioles in 2014 before landing a deal with the Yankees after the season.
