If you think a 1 TB hard drive for data storage is huge, think again.

American data storage company Seagate confirmed Wednesday it's released the first 8 TB hard drives and sold it to early-bird buyers.

The hard drives apparently have the largest storage space on any single hard-disk drive on the market today.

They were designed to meet the continuous need for more efficient hard drives to compensate for the increasing amount of data being created, shared and stored. Seagate said the goal of 8 TB hard drives is to provide these necessities while keeping consumer costs low.

"As our world becomes more mobile, the number of devices we use to create and consume data is driving an explosive growth in unstructured data," said Scott Horn, Vice President of Marketing of Seagate.

"This places increased pressure on cloud builders to look for innovative ways to build cost-effective, high capacity storage for both private and cloud-based data centers,."

In recent years, Seagate has been gradually upgrading its line of hard drives. They're using a technology called "shingled magnetic recording" to attain this tremendous storage capacity.

Shingled magnetic recording is a technique that pushes drive tracks closer together, maximizing the amount of space available on a drive.

Currently, Seagate's 8 TB hard drive is in a trial period. It's only been delivered to a few people.

Seagate plans to make the 8 TB hard drive available to the masses in the coming months.
