Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal on Wednesday slapped the U.S. Department of Education with a lawsuit alleging they forced the states to adopt the Common Core State Standards in education.
In a statement, Jindal accused the department of breaching the U.S. Constitution and federal law when it implemented a nationalized curriculum. He said the Common Core was only supposed to serve as a baseline standard that the states could adopt voluntarily, The Christian Science Monitor explained.

Some view the lawsuit as one of Jindal's attempts to gain the favor of Tea Party conservatives to spur on his presidential ambitions.
The Louisiana governor used to be a supporter of the Common Core initiative, but he now says the federal government went beyond its limits in several areas including education.
Common Core supporters argue that the initiative will help prepare students for college and maintain international competence. However, they are concerned that Jindal's actions might get in the way of implementing the standards.
The U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana has the last say in this case, but there are educational analysts that predict Jindal's failure in this move.
Thomas B. Fordham Institute president Michael Petrilli said they do not want the federal government to dictate the curriculum, but the Department of Education did not step beyond its boundaries.
Jindal is now requesting the court to order the Department of Education not to enforce agreements that will make states adopt the Common Core standards and assessments.
Maria Ferguson, the executive director of the Center on Education Policy at George Washington University, said there are lots of educators in Louisiana that have resisted Jindal's moves.
They still have to deal with a lot of "thorny issues" in raising educational standards, but filing a case against the Department of Education will not help them achieve their goals, Ferguson added.
