Hewlett-Packard is recalling more than six million power cords after reports of cords overheating, melting and even charring in the U.S. and Canada.

The recalled item is an LS-15 AC power cord that comes with HP and Compaq notebooks and related products that were sold from September 2010 to June 2012, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Customers who have experienced this problem should report this immediately and are eligible for replacement of LS-15 power cords that were made in China.

The Palo Alto based company received 29 reports that included customers complaining about this potential hazard. The faulty cords caused two minor burns and about 13 customers reported minor property damage.

According to an HP spokesperson, customers should immediately stop using and unplug the recalled cords which HP will replace at no cost. The notebooks are still safe to use under battery power.

To get in touch with HP, affected customers can do so via online at HP.com. They should click Recalls followed by Power Cord Recall.

They can also call their customer service hotline at (877) 219-6676 Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT.

HP and Google halted sales of the Chromebook 11 laptop in November 2013 after users reported overheating batteries.

In 2011, lithium ion batteries used in HP and Compaq notebooks sold from July 2007 to July 2008 were also recalled.

In an ironic viewpoint, HP just a few months ago flew a group of 20 reporters to their Houston, Texas headquarters to show how they test their products. HP demonstrated how they destroy every part of their laptops and desktops, tablets and workstations in an attempt to prove their quality control,.
