La Liga giants FC Barcelona is reportedly preparing a £12 million summer swoop to snag Manchester United flop Marcos Rojo from the Old Trafford at the end of the season.

Caught Offside noted that the 26-year-old center back, considered as "one of (the many) biggest flops" by United "in recent memory", is contemplating on a return to his home country of Argentina when his current contract with the Red Devils expires, but the possibility of playing with Barça next season could put his plans on hold.

Rojo was signed to a five-year deal by United in August 2014 after paying Primeira Liga side Sporting Clube de Portugal a transfer fee that amounted to €20 million. His stint with the Red Devils had been turbulent to say the least, which includes misunderstandings with current head coach Louis van Gaal because of game availability issues.

The Argentina international has played only eight games in the Premier League this season and has scored zero goals. He suited up in 22 games last season also without any goals to boot.

His drastic decrease in minutes and games played is said to be attributed to "injuries and poor play", although he has struggled to make his way in van Gaal's starting eleven even when he is at the pink of health during the current season.

Metro reported that "European champions Barcelona are reportedly planning a summer move for" Rojo as he "could be on his way to join compatriot Lionel Messi at the Nou Camp, with the Spanish giants believed to be preparing a £12m bid".

Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi is a teammate of Rojo in the Argentina national squad since 2011, which could be one of the reasons behind the Blaugrana's interest in the 6-foot-2 La Plata, Argentina native.

Rojo spent two productive seasons with Sporting CP in Portugal before he was acquired by United in the summer of 2014.
