Google Rolls Out April Security Update for Nexus Devices

Google has rolled out the April security update for its Nexus mobile smartphones and tablets.

The company’s Nexus Security Bulletin for this month informed its partners about all the issues. The company also stated that source code patches will be released to partners or any other interested party via the Android Open Source Project in the next couple of days.

The Nexus devices that will receive security patches include the Nexus 5, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Nexus 7 (2013 WiFi and LTE), Nexus 9 (WiFi and LTE), Nexus 10, and the Nexus Player. Pixel C is getting updates as well.

April security patch has quite a few critical patches in the update. There are six critical issues that were fixed, and four of those involved remote code for different parts of the operating system including the MediaServer. There are about 13 high level issues that were resolved as well. There were eight moderate in severity that covers media server and Android's media center that is the hub of all music, messaging and video content users download.

Google also made sure to point out that the worst of the issues involves a Critical security vulnerability that could allow remote code execution on a targeted mobile device by way of multiple methods that include email, Internet surfing, and multimedia messaging service (MMS) when processing media files.

The over the air (OTA) updates commence within 24 hours of the announcement. Google releases these small updates out much faster than big updates like the Android 5.1 to Android 6.0 update. The fixes should become more widely available to Android users soon.
