News anchor Diane Sawyer has once again marked another high point in her long career in TV news as she said goodbye to ABC's "World News" Wednesday.

As she made her cordial statements, Sawyer took time to give thanks to her viewers and mentioned how fortunate she felt about taking on her anchor role in a span of five years.

"It has been wonderful to be the home port for the brave and brilliant forces of ABC News around the world and to feel every single night you and I were in a conversation about the day together," Sawyer said. "Sometimes, as we know, there have been tough stories but you always made it clear, like me, you believed that better will come, that the future is one of possibility."

The 68-year-old TV anchor also made a promise to viewers that they will be in "strong and heady hands" when David Muir steps in and takes her place starting on September 2.

"I can't wait to see you in full gear," she told him.

Sawyer will be leaving the program on a good note. Within her final week, "World News" soared to the number one spot in the news demo, raking in consecutive sweeps among adults aged between 25 and 54 for the first time in seven years.

"So one last time, it is good to know you were watching tonight ... I thank you and I'll see you right back here at ABC News very soon," Sawyer said in her final statement.

While Sawyer has stepped down from "World News", the longtime personality of ABC News will still be on board. James Goldston, ABC News President, emphasized that Sawyer will remain to carry out interviews and make specials for the network in the "many years to come."

As for her previous anchoring duties, these have been split into two with Muir covering the nightly anchor role while George Stephanopoulos will be taking on breaking news and election nights.
