Nvidia is pushing the boundaries of virtual reality technology with the introduction of its latest photorealistic IRAY VR.

While most virtual reality contents available nowadays are focus on video games and footages captured by 360-degree camera, they do not offer highly detailed environments. At its GTC developer conference, Nvidia unveiled a new technology that can render real-life details to the extent that it makes user feel that they are actually in the environment.

Nvidia claims that such realistic rendering technology demands extensive and complicatde computing power. The IRAY VR uses light probes to photograph a room that users want to interact with. These probes not only capture the entire aesthetics of the room, but also record how light emanates and interacts with the environment.

In order to render a photorealistic virtual reality version of the room, IRAY VR requires the computing power of a supercomputer. Despite this massive computing power, Nvidia claims that it can still take up to 100 hours to completely create a photorealistic room. The reason for this is that IRAY VR requires massive space to be stitched from hundreds of light probes in order to create a 4K picture that users can look around and explore.

In a statement, Nvidia chief executive officer Jen-Hsun Huang said, "VR is not just a new gadget, it's a brand new computing platform. It is changing how we design and experience products. You could use it to design a car in a virtual show room. You could be standing next to a car."

During the presentation of IRAY VR, Huang demonstrated the power of the new technology by taking the audience on an immersive virtual reality tour of the company's newest office. The building will house at least a thousand Nvidia employees once it opens its doors.
