CW's The Vampire Diaries will be ending after season 8, according to Ian Somerhalder.

Somerhalder, who plays Damon Salvatore in the supernatural drama, made the shocking revelation at the Walker Stalker Con in Nashville on Sunday, according to a tweet posted by the convention's official Twitter handle.

"We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice," the 37-year-old actor told fans.

However, a CW spokesperson claims "no decision had been made" about the show's future.

Somerhalder's announcement comes days after Kat Graham revealed that the eighth season would be her last.

"Season eight will be my last season," Graham, who plays the role Bonnie Bennett in the vampire series, told Us Weekly. "I just hope that whatever I do after, the crew can come with me. ... The crew is going to be the hardest thing to let go, because we are a family."

"But you know what, another season is a whole other year, and we're going to blow it out," she added.

The Vampire Diaries is currently airing its seventh season, with the season finale scheduled to air on May 13. The series was renewed for an eight season earlier this month by the network along with nearly a dozen other TV shows.

Although we saw the departure of Nina Dobrev from the show at the end of last season, sources reveal that Dobrev's character Elena Gilbert will be returning to the series in its final season.

"When the show ends Nina will be a part of it some way shape or form," an insider told HollywoodLife. "She is 10,000 percent coming back."
