Nokia to Launch Offline Map App for Samsung Galaxy Devices

Nokia will soon abandon Google's Android OS on its hardware side but isn't giving up entirely on Android.

On a blog post released Friday, the Finnish gadget maker said it'll team-up with Samsung Electronics to bring its Here Maps app to Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

The free Here Maps app includes maps for 200 countries. It supports driving and walking route guidance for 100 of those maps.

When using the data connection, the app will include real time traffic, as well and transit schedules for dozens of countries.

The app's most impressive feature that will likely persuade Google Maps users is its robust offline capabilities.

Here Maps Windows Phone version lets users download maps for an entire country like the United States or just a specific region. It can be used offline.

The launching of the app will overlap with the announcement of the Samsung Galaxy Gear S smartwatch, which will also sync with Here Maps.

The partnership between the two gadget makers is another sign of Samsung's increasing reluctance to depend solely on Google services.

In recent months, there have been tensions between Samsung and Google as regards smartwatches.

Reports said Google isn't happy with the Samsung's decision to focus its wearable efforts on its own Tizen platform rather than Google's Android Wear.

Samsung has other Android Wear-based smartwatches called Gear Live, which will run Tizen, Samsung's Linux-based operating system.
