Doris Roberts: 'Everybody Loves Raymond' Actress Dies At 90

(Photo : Getty Images) Doris Roberts, 'Everybody Loves Raymond' star, passed away on Sunday at the age of 90.
Doris Roberts, best known for playing the beloved mother Marie Barone on the CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, died on Sunday at the age of 90. She died of natural causes in her sleep, according to her rep.
Roberts' role as Ray Barone's (Ray Romano) mom and Debra Barone's (Patricia Heaton) mother-in-law on the show, which ran from 1996 through 2005, won her four Emmy Awards and a total of seven nods in the Best Supporting Actress category. She also won an Emmy in the same category for her performance in the NBC medical drama St. Elsewhere.

Roberts will also be remembered for her role in the 1980s television series Remington Steele. Her other TV credits include shows like Melissa & Joey, Angie, The Naked City and Ben Casey. She also made appearances on Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy and The Middle.
The 90-year-old also featured in a series of films such as The Heartbreak Kid, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and Madea's Witness Protection.
Born in St Louis in 1925, Roberts' was raised in New York, where she took up acting on Broadway in the 1950s and went on to feature in productions like Neil Simon's The Last of the Red Hot Lovers and Terrence McNally's Bad Habits before television.
"Doris Roberts had an energy and a spirit that amazed me. She never stopped." Said Romano. "Whether working professionally or with her many charities, or just nurturing and mentoring a young, green comic trying to make it as an actor, she did it all with such a grand love for life and people and I will miss her dearly."
She is survived by her son, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren.
Roberts' Everybody Loves Raymond co-star Heaton and series creator Phil Rosenthal took to Twitter to pay tribute to the late actress.
