101-Year-Old Javelin Thrower Makes Canadian History

Calgary, Canada

While many active senior citizens may get their daily dose of physical activity through shuffle board or golf, Florence Storch had different ideas. Just this week, the 101-year-old Canadian made history by competing in the Canada 55+ Games.

Unlike the several others who signed up to participate in the event, Storch was drawn to a more obscure sport to compete in. Her selected category?

At her age, Storch was not only the oldest competitor to participate in the games this year. In fact, it has been reported that Storch was the oldest javelin thrower in Canada.

However, this was not the first time Storch found herself competing in such an extravagant event.

Storch first demonstrated her athletic talent over ten years ago, where at age 85, she signed up for her first javelin throwing competition. In the middle of organizing the senior games in her hometown, Storch discovered that no one had signed up to participate in the javelin throwing competition.

Without another thought, Storch signed up and later ended up winning a medal for her talents. Storch has been competing in javelin throwing ever since. Later on in 2010, Storch had won two major javelin throwing competitions-the 2010 Canada 55+ Games and an additional competition in Brockville.

As the oldest competitor, Storch won the gold medal for her category. She had thrown 4.26 meters.

While her passion for javelin throwing only began a little over ten years ago, Storch has always been an active athlete.

As a young girl, Storch spent the majority of her life growing up and working on her family's farm that was located in rural Alberta. When she became a school teacher in her district, Storch often kept active with her students by participating in multiple sports.

Even now, Storch still remains active by practicing her javelin throwing technique three times a week at home.

When Storch competed in the games this past Thursday, her best throw measured 3.18 meters. While each competitor was allowed six throws, Storch opted for only two, believing that she had already done her best in the competition.

87-year-old Doreen Erskine of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan managed to win the gold medal for throwing 5.24 meters. However, Storch was not discouraged by her competition.

In fact, Storch won a silver medal for her efforts and intends to continue practicing and modifying her throwing technique. Though many have asked her if she ever plans on retiring from her athletic endeavors, Storch has stated that she wishes to continue competing.
