Badminton News: Indian Players Successfully Enter 2016 China Masters’ Quarterfinal Round

Indian shuttlers H.S. Prannoy,  Pusarla V. Sindhu and the duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashiwini Ponnappa entered the quarterfinal round of the ongoing Bonny China Masters Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament on Thursday at the Changzhou Olympic Sports Center.

Current world No. 30 and the tournament's seventh-seeded men's singles competitor Prannoy defeated No. 198 Daren Liew of Malaysia in two straight sets 21-10, 21-15. The 2016 Swiss Open champion, who saw his world ranking drop by seven ranks, wrapped up the match in just 34 minutes. He will face-off against the reigning world No. 1 Chen Long of China, who ousted fellow Chinese player Shi Yuqi 21-16, 21-10.

In the women's draw, incumbent world No. 10 and event's fourth seed Sindhu overpowered China's Taipei's Chien Hui Yu, who is ranked 158 in the world. The two-time World Championships bronze medalist finished the match in 33 minutes winning two sets 21-9, 21-17.

With the win, the 20-year-old Indian star booked a quarterfinal showdown with Thailand's Porntip Buranaprasertsuk, who outclassed the 20-year-old and world No. 69 Shen Yaying of China.

The 24-year-old Thai holds the 18th place in the world rankings with 191-155 win-loss record and with 45,926 garnered points in 23 tournaments that she had competed.

While in the women's doubles, the dynamic tandem of Gutta and Ponnappa defeated the Chinese Taipei duo of Hsieh Pei Chen and Wu Ti Jung 21-12, 21-12 in 28 minutes. The current world No. 16 Indian pair will now face the top-seeded Chinese duplet of Luo Ying and Luo Yu, the BWF's No. 7 in the women's doubles event.

Women's singles top seed Li Xuerui of China successfully advances to the quarterfinals after beating Japanese Ayumi Mine. Fellow Chinese and second seed Lin Dan outlast Riichi Takeshita of Japan. 

Mixed doubles top-seeded Chinese duo Xu Chen and Ma Jin got the better of the Indonesian pair of Hafiz Faisal and Shella Dev Aulia.
