Fiat Chrysler has announced that it will more than 1.1 million cars and SUVs worldwide because the vehicles may roll away after drivers exit.
The recall covers the 2012-2014 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans and the 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV. Fiat Chrysler is recalling 811,586 vehicles in the United States, 52,000 vehicles in Canada, nearly 17,000 in Mexico, and 248,667 elsewhere.

According to the investigation of U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the glitch affects models with console-mounted electronic shift levers that make it somewhat difficult for drivers to tell whether the vehicle is in the “park” position by looking at the shifter.
“The vehicles affected by this recall are equipped with electronic shift levers that return to the same position after each manipulation. Gear-selection is conveyed to the driver by multiple sets of indicator lights, not gear-selector position, and unless due care is taken, drivers may draw erroneous conclusions about the status of their vehicles,” Fiat Chrysler explained in a statement.
A total of 314 complaints about the matter were sent to the NHTSA, of them being 121 instances of wrecks that resulted from cars that rolled away. There have been 41 injuries because of this malfunction. Some of the injuries have been severe, including one that involved a fractured pelvis.
The Italian-American automaker said it will update the vehicles to automatically prevent them from moving, under certain circumstances, even if the driver fails to put the vehicle in park. The company did not say when the recall remedy will be available.
Fiat Chrysler said it has started equipping the Charger and 300 with a new shift-lever design in the 2015 model year and for Grand Cherokee in the 2016 model year.
