The Chinese government announced new guidelines for coal-fueled power plants in the country to reduce the level of carbon emissions.
The new regulations will temporarily halt the approval of new coal-fired power stations and postpone construction of several approved coal plants. Experts said that construction of around 200 coal plants would be affected after this new guidelines is enforced.

The announcement of these new guidelines is conspicuous as it came just two after China signed the Paris accord on Friday. China and US are among the 175 countries that signed the Paris accord which aims to curb carbon emissions across the world.
However, analysts feel that despite being a signatory at the Paris accord and announcement of slew of guidelines, huge numbers of coal plants will continue to operate across China.
This is largely due to the fact that coal plants generate millions of jobs and tax revenues, making them an important contributor to China's economy.
Many experts reckon that China is caught in a classic catch 22 situation in its nationwide drive to reduce its dependence on coal. Some argue that Chinese government will need enormous political will power to clamp down on coal plants. Otherwise China's ambition to bring down carbon emission will continue to be an elusive dream.
