Peng, 28, delivered nine services aces, 17 winners, limited her unforced errors to just seven and broke Safarova twice to enter the quarters.

The Chinese national is set to face the winner of the Belinda Bencic and Jelena Jankovic match which Swiss Bencic leads 1-0 at press time.

Peng is now the lone Chinese player in the singles competition after fellow countrywomen Zheng Saisai and Wang Qiang have been eliminated in the second round.

Peng, along with Hsieh Su-wei of Chinese Taipei are the French Open doubles champions and are heavily favored to win the tournament after the exit of Wimbledon champions Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani.

Vinci has been eliminated by Peng in the third round. Errani on the other hand is also doing well in the singles competition as she goes up against Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals.

The 2013 Wimbledon champions Peng and Hsieh are set to play the duo of Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan and Czech Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova in the third round of the women's doubles.

If they win their match against the Japanese-Czech tandem, they will go up against a possible threat to the crown, Serana and Venus Williams in the quarters.

With World No. 3 Li Na sidelined due to a knee injury, Peng is playing not only for herself but also for her country and is handling the pressure quite well saying that it's tough to play and don't want to take the pressure.

"Just be simple. Play for yourself or for your country," said Peng.
