The highly-rated military-themed series "Descendants of the Sun," which gained popularity not only in South Korea but also in China and other Asian countries, would have its sequel out by 2017.

In its report, Asia Times revealed that KBS, the one behind the successful project, has been in talks for the production of the anticipated sequel of the show. It was pointed out, though, that it is still unclear if the upcoming project would be a second season 2 or a totally different series just inspired by its original run.

"We are creating the second 'Descendants of the Sun,'" dished KBS drama department head Jung Sung-hyo.

While discussions have been "positive" so far, especially with the original writer Kim Eun-sook and the main cast, it can be noted that "nothing has been set in stone" yet.

"We can't say they are in for certain because actors don't make such decisions until they read the script," he further said about the upcoming "Descendants of the Sun" sequel.

Meanwhile, Jung admitted that "We went through lots of struggles and accumulated know-how from pre-producing this show, and we are going to write a book for future reference." However, despite this, they are keen about coming up with the next project to "give back to the support of fans both at home and abroad."

"'Descendants of the Sun' rewrote history by rekindling 'hallyu,' so I'm sure our upcoming project will receive critical acclaim domestically and internationally, too," he added.

In the meantime, KBS chief producer Bae Kyung-soo shared that the production team's decision to film and edit the entire show way ahead of its scheduled release date have definitely helped them.

"Pre-production helped raise the quality of our videos and allowed us time to think things through many times," Bae said.

Does it mean that they are doing the "Descendants of the Sun" sequel in advance as well?
