The Maze Runner: The Death Cure has halted production for an indefinite period after the film's lead actor Dylan O'Brien's injuries turned out to be more severe than initially expected.

"The resumption of principal photography on Maze Runner: The Death Cure has been further delayed to allow Dylan O'Brien more time to fully recover from his injuries," 20th Century Fox said in a statement. "We wish Dylan a speedy recovery and look forward to restarting production as soon as possible."

The 24-year-old actor was injured on set while filming scenes for the third installment in the YA action-adventure series in Vancouver on March 18. O'Brien was rushed to the hospital after falling off a moving vehicle, which left him with a "concussion, facial fracture and lacerations," according to a WorkSafeBC report.

The film's director, Wes Ball, released the following statement at the time: "Well, it's been a whirlwind of emotions these past few days. I've been overwhelmed with feelings of anger and sadness and guilt. But, ultimately I find myself left with just a deep love and respect for Dylan. He is one tough cookie."

The film's production was put on hold in the wake of the accident and shooting was scheduled to resume on May 9, but the actor's injuries turned out to be more serious than first believed, leaving the studio with no choice but to push back production.

"His injuries are very serious and he needs more time to recover," said O'Brien's publicist, Jennifer Allen.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure was originally slated to hit theaters on Feb. 17, 2017. However, the film will not be able to keep up with that date because of the long delay in production.
