Ogilvy & Mather teamed up with Hong Kong Shark Foundation and WildAid to produce a striking video aimed at calling attention to Hong Kong's vast consumption of shark's fin soup, especially during wedding ceremonies.
The video shows a bride on a fishing boat roughly hacking off the fin off a shark before her groom kicks the body over the side. The video narrates that for every Hong Kong wedding, at least 30 sharks have to die.
The video highlights the cruel reality of the killing sharks for their fins. The animals are left to die in the ocean after. The powerful message reminds everyone of the unnecessary killing of sharks to the point that they are nearly extinct.
Sharks have been existing for more than 400 million years. However, in the last 15 years, they are facing near extinction because of overfishing. The large decrease of their population is mainly due to consumption of delicacies made from their flesh. Hong Kong is one of the largest consumers of shark fins in soup. This dish is traditionally served during weddings and is seen as a sign of wealth and prosperity.
A survey done in 375 traditional Chinese restaurants revealed that 98 percent of them serve shark fin as part of their 2016 Chinese New Year menu.
Reed Collins, Chief Creative Officer of Ogilvy & Mather Hong Kong, is proud of the partnership the company has with Hong Kong Shark Foundation and WildAid and expressed full support for the important work that these organizations do. The video will air on YouTube and Facebook soon.
