Leica has announced the new model in its M-series of digital rangefinder cameras.

The new M-D or Typ 262 is considered as purely functional camera that completely decreases the most essential important parameters required for photography, which are shutter speed, aperture, distance and ISO sensitivity.

The camera has no LCD camera, but it includes optical rangefinder. It allows the user to snap two superimposed images into one. The viewfinder has a 0.68x magnification, with markings to help the user frame shots for 35/135mm, 28/90mm and 50/75mm lenses.

The basic specs of the M camera are identical to the two-year-old Leica M, including a 24-megapixel CMOS sensor, reverse Galilean optical viewfinder with framing lines for different focal lengths and three frames-per-second continuous shooting for eight frames.

The M-D only comes with dials to adjust shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. This leaves the user with just the bare minimum to adjust the camera. The M-D also saves all images in DNG RAW format and there is obviously no video recording option. In order to make the camera more discreet, Leica has painted the entire body in black and also omitted the traditional red Leica dot in favor of its unobtrusive appearance. The shutter is also silent and tops off at 3fps in burst mode.

Using the Leica M-D therefore becomes the closest experience to using a film camera. Leica M-D’s idea is to remove all the technology and delivers the purest photography experience, allowing the photographer to concentrate on capturing the moment without distractions.

The Leica M-D is priced at $5995 and will go on sale in May.
