A new set of tickets for the Rio 2016 Olympics Games for the fields of gymnastics, canoeing, and rowing have been rolled out, organizers announced on Wednesday, May 4.

Starting noon on Thursday, May 5, an unspecified number of tickets across different price categories became available on the game's official website, according to Xinhua news agency. Furthermore, every Thursday, the Rio 2016 organizers will release tickets for sessions that used to be unavailable.

For fans living outside Brazil, tickets may be purchased on official ticketing outlet sites. More tickets will be put on sale in the following weeks after seating plans and venues have been officially finalized.

Last month, the organizers of the Rio Olympic 2016 also released another set of passes for the event's opening ceremony, closing ceremony and other blue riband athletics events.

Ticket holders for the session will get a chance to witness Jamaican star Usain Bolt during the 100m, 200m and 4 x 100m relay and other once-in-a-lifetime, historical events.

So far, more than 60 percent of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games tickets have been sold. There is said to be a high demand for passes to basketball, athletics, football, handball and volleyball games.

The figure, however, is way lower than what London had sold at this point during the 2012 Summer Games. According to NPR, factors including the recession, political turmoil, high crime rate, and the alarming Zika virus, are all contributing to shoo potential buyers away.

Because of this, Ricardo Leyser, Brazil's new sports head, has thought of seeking alternative options to fill the stands. He noted that another factor affecting the snail-paced ticket sales is that locals are not aware they can buy tickets.

However, it seems not everyone is interested or can afford the tickets. A manager from a local supermarket was quoted saying that the tickets are "too expensive."
