Opera Software has launched a virtual private network (VPN) client for iPhones and iPads.
The new app follows Opera’s debut in late April of a free, built-in virtual private network in the beta version of its PC and Mac browsers. SurfEasy, a Canadian VPN provider that Opera acquired in early 2015, will offer the Opera’s VPN services.

The company stated that more virtual locations will be added, including a built-in adblocker to stop ads and improve privacy when using Safari, Chrome and other apps. Also, the browser will open up a world of non-georestricted content.
One of the reasons building VPN for Opera is to help people get around corporate and school firewalls. allows users to encrypt their local web traffic, for further privacy protection. This is useful when using unencrypted public Wi-Fi networks, too.
“Every day, millions of people, from students to working people, find that social-media sites...are blocked when they surf on their campus or workplace Wi-Fi...we help people to break down the barriers of the web,” SurfEasy president Chris Houston said in the iOS app’s announcement.
After installing and opening the app on the mobile device, it will remove ad-tracking cookies – those that follow the user around the web – in order to serve up personalized advertising and share your data with advertisers and marketers.
The data that Opera VPN collects may include web addresses that users visit. While it is completely free, the company uses anonymous market insights derived from customer usage to help support the service. In addition, the company make the data available to third parties who are interested in better understanding the mobile ecosystem and how it progresses.
Opera’s iOS app is available as a free download here on the iTunes App Store.
