The Islamic State (IS) taped the execution of Steven Joel Sotloff and released the footage entitled "A Second Message to America" on the Internet on Tuesday.
Reports suggest Sotloff was not beheaded on the same day that the other American journalist, James Foley, was executed. U.S. officials compared the two videos that the Islamic State militants released.

The recently released video of Sotloff's execution showed that he had more facial hair compared to the video when he appeared alongside Foley, who was allegedly beheaded two weeks ago. However, U.S. officials said in a statement that there was no reason not to believe that both journalists were killed at the same time.
Sotloff was shown in the last part of the beheading of Foley and he appeared to be nearly bald and had some facial hair, while the newly-released video showed his beard to be evidently longer. These serve as clues that some parts of the videos were not filmed all at once.
The videos might have been recorded a long time ago but were released at a much later time to have more impact, U.S. officials added.
The video of the alleged beheading of Sotloff was similar to that of Foley's video. They both started with a documented announcement from U.S. President Barack Obama about the authorized airstrikes against the Islamic State.
Sotloff and Foley both wore an orange robe likened to the clothing used by prisoners from Guantanamo Bay. Sotloff then proceeded to speak, blaming the president for his beheading.
Both the videos show the executioner and the journalist somewhere in the desert. However, Eliot Higgins, the founder of "Bellingcat", an investigative journalism website, said that the two videos might have been filmed at different sites.
The Foley video was speculated to have been videoed in Erbil, Iraq. The second video showed evident stronger winds.
In the video, the executioner says he is back because of Obama's arrogant foreign policy towards the Islamic State. The execution has to be done because of Obama's insistence on bombing some areas that ISIS already claimed as their territory, he said.
Sotloff's executioner was said to be a British national ISIS member who threatened to kill the British journalist named David Haines. U.S. officials also speculated that the latter might have been executed already.
Sotloff disappeared in August last year near the Syria-Turkey border.
