Google Partners with Physicists to Build Quantum Computers

The Bloch Sphere represents a qubit, the fundamental building block of quantum computers.
Google has teamed up with scientists from the University of California, Santa Barbara to develop new processors for quantum computing systems.
The company wants to have its own cutting-edge technology that uses more artificial intelligence in designs to eventually speed-up its services in the future.

Google yesterday unveiled a hardware initiative to develop and build processors for its Quantum Artificial Intelligence Group.
The team will work with researchers from UC Barbara on the initiative.
The creation of quantum computers by both teams aims to use properties of subatomic particles to perform calculations millions of times faster than normal computers.
Computers these days use electrical transistors to represent the ones and zeros of binary computing.
On the other hand, quantum computers will use qubits or quantum bits. It will rely on the laws of quantum mechanics to obtain different states.
The quantum bits can control multiple states simultaneously. It can be a 1 or a 0 or both at the same time. Thus, it can work on multiple calculations in parallel and increase their processing power.
Researchers, however, face a problem with the stability of qubits. Qubits are highly unstable and can change their state at the tiniest change in temperature or magnetism.
This is the main reason Google wants to work with the physicists at UC Barbara to solve the qubits stability problem.
Google said both teams will work on processors based on superconducting electronics. This involves cooling materials to a point near absolute zero where electrical resistance and magnetic fields are minimized.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is also working on its own quantum computing research.
