Along with the reports of Apple partnering with Visa, AmEx and MasterCard to strengthen its near-field communication (NFC) for the upcoming iPhone 6, the Cupertino-based company is talking with Nordstrom for a mobile payments system.

Apple is still looking to work with physical retail shops to help expand the payment system they want to include on the upcoming iPhone 6, which is set to unveil this month.

Nordstrom is an American upscale fashion retailer based in Seattle, Washington.

According to its employees, Nordstrom upgraded its current iPod touch-based mobile point-of-sale hardware recently with new features that support the "most recent iPhone" models.

The new point-of-sale (POS) system at Nordstrom is similar to EasyPay units used by the Apple Store, said reports from Bank Innovation, a media company that writes about the financial services industry.

It also noted that Apple chose Nordstrom due to its established high-end brand and wide brick-and-mortar reach.

Reports may be true since Apple's new payment system will need broad consumer adoption that will translate into wide availability and support.

This move by Apple is an effort to provide support for the NFC-based mobile payments system when it launches later this year.

Apple, Inc. is expected to launch its next-gen iPhone 6 lineup at a special event on September 9.
