"Inferno," the highly-anticipated sequel to Dan Brown's best-selling novel turned hit movie "Angels and Demons," is expected to make its North American and China debut this fall.

Brown, an American author, gained a wide following among Chinese readers after the release of his widely-popular novel "The Da Vinci Code."

When the book's film adaptation was released in China in 2006, it grossed 105 million yuan ($16.67 million).

The suspense thriller starring Oscar winner Tom Hanks went on to become the third highest-grossing film at the Chinese box-office that year.

Hanks reprises his role as Robert Langdon in "Inferno," which is set to make its North American, and possibly, China debut on Oct. 28.

In the film, Langdon gains consciousness inside a hospital, as he struggles to recover his lost memory.

"Inferno" was shot in Italy and France.

In the meantime, Marvel's "Captain America: Civil War" reigned supreme at the China box-office, as it opened with $30.3 million last Friday, and hauled in $95.8 million during its weekend debut.

The critically-acclaimed superhero film's impressive run in China is the second-biggest three-day opening for a Hollywood film in the mainland, which is only behind "Furious 7" in 2015.

Only three foreign films have so far earned more on their opening day in China: "Furious 7" ($64 million, Friday), "Avengers: Age of Ultron" ($33.9 million, Tuesday) and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ($33 million, Saturday).

If "Captain America: Civil War" maintains its strong showing at the Chinese box-office, it may even surpass the earnings of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" ($115.6 million) and "Iron Man 3" ($121.2 million).

However, "Civil War" still has one more weekend to dominate China's cinemas before release of the "Allegiant," "The Angry Birds Movie" and "Southpaw" open on Friday, May 20.

"Inferno" is also expected to score big when it makes its China debut.
