U.S. President Barack Obama's approval rating plunged to a record low in California, demonstrating his popularity decline among some of his strongest supporters, based on a new Field Poll.

Obama's job performance rating among Democrats dropped to 68 percent from 76 percent in June. In 2012, over 70 percent of Asian and Latino voters in California approved of Obama, but that number has decreased to around 45 percent, Orange County Register detailed.

The said poll also showed that 45 percent of voters in California approve of Obama's performance, while 43 percent of them disapprove. In June, the president's approval rating was recorded at 50 percent.

Immigration policy allowed Obama to obtain support from Latinos and Asians in California, but the same issue has now caused his popularity to go down in the state, according to Pat Brown Institute of Public Affairs executive director Raphael Sonenshein.

Immigration is a big issue among Latinos and Asians and they have become critical of the high number of deportations under the Obama administration. This happened because the president was unable to rally Congressional support for his immigration bill, Sonenshein explained.

Obama's opponents also succeeded in preventing him from coming through with the things he promised to do for his supporters. Democrats are more prone to discouragement compared with Republicans, Sonenshein added.

Although Obama succeeded in restarting the country's auto industry, eliminating Osama bin Laden and implementing Obamacare, he failed in other major areas, Sonenshein said.

The U.S. president was unable to convince the GOP-dominated House of Representatives to implement minimum wage hike and make infrastructure investments to boost the country's economy.

Field Poll director Mark DiCamillo said Obama usually achieves a California rating that is 10 points higher than nationwide. He explained that the recent numbers only demonstrate that his popularity in the state is plunging faster than on the national scale.

The result of the poll will most likely not affect the Democrats' control in California, since 43 percent of the state's voters are Democrats and only 28 percent sided with the GOP. However, Sonenshein said it could present a good omen for Republicans in the congressional race this November.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Foundation of Orange County chairman Dan Jacobson compared Obama's performance to that of George W. Bush during his second term. At the same point, the latter got a 32 California approval rate and 39 percent across the country.

Considering that the crises Obama faces have no immediate solutions, Jacobson thinks Obama's performance is a lot better than the other presidents. He said Obama will still be among the "four greatest presidents" in U.S. history.
