This has been the complaint of neighbors for many years but there were no actions done until the structure became an obstruction. The 800-square-meter structure was said to be damaging to the building's structure. This prompts the authorities to give the owner 15 days to tear it down.
One of the neighbors said in an interview, "They've been renovating for years. They normally do it at night. He was very arrogant. He could care less about my complaints."
The owner was identified as a businessman and a former member of the district's political advisory body. He resided in the 26th floor of the apartment. As per the interview of the Beijing Times Newspaper, he said that he would comply with the authorities but the structure has been just an "ornamental garden." He denied the structure as a villa.
The photos of the said structure were shown all over China and online news sites. It has gained a title of "Beijing's most outrageous illegal structure."
This case has been related to the lifestyle of China's rich and famous, where they are always given a special treatment. Their luxury vehicles without any license plate are tolerated by the authorities as well as their expensive houses that was built on lands that should be given to the farmers.
This story is also related to a developer in Henyang who built 25 villas at the top of a shopping center. The developer also was given an order to tear it down but the case was dismissed in the agreement that the villas will remain intact and will not be sold to others.
Xi Jinping, China's leader plans to tear down the corruption in the country. The capital city has initiated a campaign to tear down illegal structures but the results remain to be a blur.
