He also showcased his returning net game, winning 35 points out of 52 trips to the net.

Recently, Federer had been in a slump until his finals appearance with number one in the world Novak Djokovic in Wimbledon.

Since then, his back - that has been giving him trouble in the past - is in much better condition. He also says he has found a better racket with a bigger head that suits him.

The win against Agut improves his record to 25 wins and 1 loss in night matches at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. He sees night sessions as very special and important in New York.

On the quarterfinals matchup this Thursday, Federer will be facing twentieth seeded Gael Monfils of France.

Monfils beat seventh seeded Grigor Dimitrov also in straight sets: 7-5, 7-6, 7-5.

He says that it is his first ever win in Arthur Ashe Stadium, and that the energy of the New York crowd serves to improve his game and performance.

Monfils has not dropped a set the whole tournament.

With the win over Dimitrov, he meets Federer in the quarterfinal matchup.

The Swiss number two ranked player in the world has won seven out of his nine matches with Monfils.

Despite the record, Federer says that Monfils is one of the most exciting tennis players in the sport today.

"I think we can get ready for some good points - some good retrieving by him, some attacking by me," Federer says.
