Joe and Anthony Russo, directors of the famed Marvel Cinematic Universe trilogy 'Captain America,' have announced plans to direct a fantasy trilogy that will feature a Chinese superhero.

The superhero, unofficially named 'Captain Chin' by numerous fans, will have three movies. The Chinese superhero is reportedly based on a character created by US-based Excel Comics in 2012.

The Russos are partnering with China-based Fangjin Media to produce the sci-fi action series that will feature three installments, namely 'The Hero’s Awakening' (scheduled for release in 2018), followed by 'Nirvana' and 'A Hero’s Sacrifice,' which will be released in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Fangjin Media spokesperson Su Zhenping said the title of the trilogy would not be Captain China, but it would be “similar to ‘Captain America.’"

The series' protagonist appears to be like his American counterpart except for a few differences: he is Chinese while Steve Rogers is American; he is a 'Communist Super Hero' while Rogers is for America, which is democratic; and he possesses powers of telekinesis while Rogers does not.

According to the Excel Comic, 'Captain China' is the result of the “Enhanced Soldier Project,” which is part of the Great Leap Forward championed by Chinese leader Mao. He is chosen from thousands of military men who were tested for the purpose. After the project, he was given the name “Liberator.”

'Captain China' ultimately survives the Mao era, sleeps for 50 years, and like Steve Rogers, he wakes up in the modern era. He dons a red costume that looks like the Chinese flag and uses a Mauser pistol commonly used by the Red Army during World War 2.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Joe Russo said, “[Captain China’s] a normal person with a normal life and one day he happens upon the fact that he has [telekinetic] abilities and it opens up a whole world to him that he didn’t know existed.”

The first installment of the movie will reportedly have a budget of around 350 million yuan (about USD $53 million), and the whole trilogy will have a total combined budget of 1.5 billion yuan (about $230 million). The Russos will co-produce the films and will bring along their team to take charge of everything involved in the production.

The first installment in the 'Captain China' trilogy will be released in 2018.
