Malaysia's men's team, led by the current world No. 2 Lee Chong Wei, won against Germany with a 5-0 whitewash to advance to the quarterfinals of the ongoing Total BWF Thomas Cup Finals 2016 on Monday at the Kunshan Sports Center in Jiangsu, China.

According to South China Morning Post, the two-time men's singles Olympic silver medalist Lee came through an unexpectedly tight first game against the 22-year-old German Kai Schaefer before wrapping up the match with a hard-fought two sets 21-19, 21-15 victory that lasted 40 minutes.

The 33-year-old Began Serai, Perak native, who was the recently crowned Asian champion in Wuhan, had a tough time playing with the world No. 137 shuttler from Germany after being matched nearly blow-for-blow before prevailing, in the end, to give the Malaysian team its first win in Group C on the second day of the prestigious tournament.

The premiere badminton team championship is seen as an essential tune-up for the three-time world championships finalist Lee, who is said to be preparing for his final chance of an Olympic gold medal following his two losses with Lin Dan of China in the finals.

Lee's teammates had an easier time with the 24-year-old world No. 36 Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin getting the better of 20-year-old 147th ranked Lars Schaenzle 21-7, 21-16 while the world No. 67 Wei Feng Chong won over the 19-year-old 330th ranked David Peng in two straight sets 21-18, 21-9.

The Malaysian tandem Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong dispensed the German pair Richard Domke and Fabian Holzer 21-11, 21-12 in just 26 minutes while the duo Kien Keat Koo and Boon Heong Tan defeated the Mark Lamsfuss and Josche Zurwonne 21-10, 21-15.

With victories over England and Germany, the Malaysian team is already into the quarterfinals and will be facing the South Korean team to contest for a semifinals berth.
