Laura Jane Grace, the transgender founder, lead singer, songwriter and guitarist of the punk rock band Against Me!, protested North Carolina's controversial HB2 "Bathroom Bill" by setting her birth certificate on Sunday during a show at Durham's Motorco Music Hall.
"Goodbye gender!" Grace exclaimed as she pulled out a lighter and burned her birth certificate before the crowd erupted in cheer.

Grace, who came out as transgender in 2012, was protesting against the HB2 law, or Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act, which forces transgender people to use restrooms that match the "biological sex" listed on their birth certificates.
The bill has since prompted artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam and Ringo Starr to cancel their shows in North Carolina as a form of protest.
"I'm going to create an event around the show as a form of protest to say that despite whatever stupid laws they enact, trans people are not going to be scared," Grace told Buzzfeed last month. "They are not going to go away."
"An attack by a transgender person against another person in a bathroom has never been documented," she added. "There are more incidents of straight senators having issues in bathrooms than transgender people."
Not only did Grace set ablaze her birth certificate, she also mocked the writers of the controversial bill by sharing a toilet-paper-version of the HB2 bill, which calls for "mandatory hate in our school" and "hate in our cities" and is signed by the Governor of North Carolina, Pat McCrory.
